The still-active volcano of Pico de Fogo is the highest point in the Cape Verde Islands rising to a lofty 2,829m above sea level. An ascent of the peak makes for one of the most challenging hikes on the islands.

Cape Verde’s awe-inspiring natural wonder last erupted in 1995 when a subsidiary vent at Pico Novo ruptured. At the summit the crater stretches some 500m in diameter and drops to over 180m deep.

For the keen walker, one of the great highlights of a visit to Cape Verde is an ascent of Mount Fogo volcano (roughly 5 hours up and down). Rewarding hikers with stunning views over the crater and across to the island of Santiago, the ascent from the village of Chã das Caldeiras is not for the faint hearted and should always be accompanied by an experienced local guide. Often buffered by wind, the walk up is slow going and tough. The descent, by contrast, is simply exhilarating – often literally running through deep volcanic ash.
