Periyar Wildlife Reserve, is an example of the extraordinary diversity of nature in southern India. Sprawling over an area of 777 sq km and one of the 27 tiger reserves in India it is a fantastic place to come to see some of India’s famous wildlife.
Established as a National Park in 1934 the Lake Periyar area was designated a part of Project Tiger in 1973, however the area into which visitors are allowed is limited and tiger sightings are extremely uncommon. Instead visitors enjoy some of the best sightings of herds of wild elephant which can easily be spotted by the shores of the lake and for which it is famous.
There is a variety of other wildlife to be seen including barking deer, wild boar and the Indian bison as well the giant Malabar squirrel, with boat trips the favoured way of exploring. Such trips operate throughout the day, but early morning and late afternoon are the best times. Foot safaris are also possible.
