Dramatically perched above a rocky outcrop above modern Bergama the remains of the ancient city of Pergamum are well worth a visit to see the Temple of Athena, Library of Zeus and to sit in the spectacular theatre, literally carved into the hillside. The town itself is home to the Red Basilica which has a surprising past.
The modern town of Bergama is dominated to the north by a hill, atop which is sited one of, if not the, most dramatically-located ancient cities in northern Turkey. Lysimachus, a contemporary of Alexander the Great chose the acropolis as his treasury and later Eumenes II turned it into a powerful city, capital of a kingdom.
Remains of the acropolis include the 3rd century BC Temple of Athena, the famous Library of Zeus, said to compete on equal terms with the one in Alexandria. The spectacular theatre, chiselled into the hill it was capable of seating some 10,000 spectators – and what a stunning view they had, looking over the vast plain below.

Getting Around
The sites around Bergama are spread out and in the heat of the day sightseeing can be hard work. Travellers generally visit as part of a privately arranged visit which allows for as much time as one wants at each place of interest. Taxis are available in the town itself and they too can be hired for tours, though with waiting time this option can prove expensive.
