Once going to be the great new capital of the newly Communist Laos state Vieng Xai fell into decay and today is little more than the gateway to the amazing Pathet Lao caves. Similar in function to the Cu Chi Tunnels of Vietnam the caves were equipped with all manner of facilities to provide the Pathet Lao with the base from which to manage the war in the north. A visit for anyone near Vieng Xai or staying in Xam Nua is a must.

The landscape of northern Laos is characterised by karst limestone rock formations – what proved to be a perfect hideout for the Pathet Lao in what has now been recognised as the most heavily bombed region in history.

The caves were in use from the 1950’s when then Pathet Lao forces were fighting the French. In ideologically joining their communist comrades from Vietnam the caves were expanded and soon were home to thousands spread over dozens of caves.

Cut into the rock face and along the valley floor the caves were an incredibly dangerous place to be as the Americans relentlessly bombed the area; inside were workshops, offices, print works, weaving centres, kitchens and hospital facilities. The caves were later used as ‘re-education centres’.

Attractions in Pathet Lao Caves

Of the hundreds of caves around a half dozen are open. Tham Than Souphanouvoung was once the home of Prince Souphanouvoung, Than Than Khamtay is named after President Khamtay and is split into various rooms, with garden and even a theatre. Tham Than Kaysone was the residence of the Pathet Lao chief of staff – Kaysone Phomvihane whilst Tham Xieng Muang was a hospital.

Xam Nua is famous for its market that stocks Chinese and Vietnamese produce as well as local goods.

Activities in Pathet Lao Caves

Most people visit from Xam Nua, a larger centre with better accommodation than run down, uninteresting Vieng Xai; iot’s around 12km from Xam Nua to the caves. The caves are the main draw though the scenery throughout the area is beautiful and there are minority tribal villages to explore.

Relaxing

The caves are the perfect spot to pause, sit and reflect on the true futility of war.

Getting Around

You’ll need your own transport as it’s difficult to explore without in this little-visited region. If intending to explore the countryside only do so with a knowledgeable local guide: a vast amount of ordnance was dropped on the region and much remains unexploded. ALWAYS ensure that you check with local people (hence the need for a guide) where is safe to walk. NEVER handle or touch unexploded ordnance.
