Pamplemousses is a small inland village located to the north east of Port Louis. The village is home to two of the islands major attractions, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens and the L’Aventure du Sucre.

Pamplemousses was named after the fruit which was first imported into Mauritius from Java by the Dutch. The gardens are known to naturalists throughout the world for their large collection of indigenous and exotic plants, including the giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies and many species of palm trees.

Attractions in Pamplemousses & Botanical Gardens

These gardens cover over 60 acres and originate from 1735 when Labourdonnais bought a house in the grounds. It began as a self-sufficient vegetable garden, quickly developing into a major supplier of fresh produce for ships calling at Port Louis. In 1768 it was brought by Pierre Poivre a French horticulturalist who introduced plants from all over the world. It is now home to some 80 palms and a pond covered in enormous floating Giant Amazon water lilies. The gardens also boast 500 different species of plants, a spice garden and the Talipot Palms, said to flower every 60 years after which they die. The deers and tortoises are sure to delight the youngsters, whilst an old French mansion, Château Mon Plaisir, and an old sugar mill conjure up pictures of Mauritius’ rich historical past. Entry is free.

Getting Around

There are frequent local buses between Port Louis, Grand Baie and Pamplemousses.
