Located along the UNESCO recognised Belize Barrier Reef, there are in the region of 200 small tropical Caribbean islands. Some are populated, others deserted; many are fringed by beautiful white sand beaches and others by dense mangroves. The clear blue waters here are warm, shallow and filled with marine life, making the whole coast a fascinating place to snorkel or dive.
Whilst the larger islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker are the focus for most visitors to the Caribbean region of Belize, there are many smaller islands within easy reach that are worth visiting on a day trip, or to stay for longer.
With over 200 Cayes in the region, there are many islands large and small to explore.
At the the northern end of the Belize reef, close to Belize City, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, the islands of St George’s Caye, Goff’s Caye, Spanish Lookout Caye and Swallow Caye are popular places to visit, and more details of these Cayes can be found below.
Further south, Tabacco Caye, Silke Caye and Laughing Bird Caye are also magical places to visit. More details of these Cayes can be found in the Placencia guide.
Attractions in Other Cayes
Don’t miss the manatee close to Goff’s Caye and a freshly caught barbequed fish on the beach after some snorkelling.
Activities in Other Cayes
Snorkel, dive, bird watch or look for manatee – the Cayes are a marine wonder. And if it all gets too much, just lay back in a hammock and take a nap.
Relaxing
Settle down on the beach of the desert island, Goff’s Caye, and enjoy some moments of complete tranquillity.
Getting Around
There is a good taxi boat service between the Cayes – but be sure to arrange a pick-up if you are getting off on one of the more remote desert islands!
