Onsen is the Japanese word for hot springs, of which there are many dotted throughout Japan. Traditionally used as public bathing places, Onsen are now often run as part of a hotel, ryokan or Bed & Breakfast.

These hot springs or baths can be found indoors or outdoors, and often in the countryside. They are very popular with couples and families who want to get away from a hectic city life to relax.

Naturally hot water from geo-thermally heated springs is used in the baths and the mineral content contained in these waters are said to have great healing powers.
