The remote and often-bypassed region of Olancho is an agriculture-based department of Honduras, particularly famous for produce like its dairy products and meats. These sparsely populated highlands, stretching from Nicaragua to Tegucigalpa, offer a taste of real rural Honduras.
Olancho has many surprises to offer to the more intrepid visitor: in addition to Olancho's fine examples of rural Honduran life, there are national parks and archaeological sites to explore, both above ground and below.
Juticalpa is the commercial capital and seat of Government of the rural department of Olancho. A colonial city dating back to the late 1700's, it may be a good place from which to explore what Olancho has to offer.
Those wanting an authentic taste of rural Honduras may prefer Catacamas, a colonial town 40km away from Juticalpa.
Beyond these settlements, exploratory spirits can find caves, mountains, forests … and human bones! The Caves of Talgua are home to two and a half thousand year old human remains which glow in the dark. El Boqueron Natural Monument and the Sierra de Agalta National Park are natural highlights.

Getting Around
The caves of Talga can be reached by private car or by buses that leave in the mornings from Catacama and return at lunchtime.
Olancho's towns are connected by local buses. Parts of the Sierra de Agalta National Park can be accessed by car, such as the Babilonia waterfalls.
