Overlooking Lake Natron and the great plains of Kenya to the north, Ol Donyo Lengai (known as the ‘Mountain of God’ to Masai people) is an active volcano and one of Tanzania’s most spectacular mountains. Due to its remote location and lack of nearby facilities, few people attempt the hike to the summit – making this an undiscovered gem. Most travellers prefer to view its symmetrical cone from a distance.
The volcano erupts sporadically, sending small streams of grey lava down the crater rim whilst spitting hot ash high into the sky. The last violent eruption was in 1993.
Attractions in Ol Donyo Lengai
The rewards for those attempting the hike are huge – the chance to see bubbling lava in one of the smaller cones on the summit crater; a walk along a volcanic ash trail – much akin to a ‘moonscape’; and a memorable view of a near perfect crater rim. The view from the rim, west, over the Ngorongoro Highlands, and out to the Serengeti in the distance, rivals that of any in Tanzania on a cloud-free morning.
Activities in Ol Donyo Lengai
The strenuous summit climb of Ol Donyo Lengai can be arranged from one of the camps on the shores of Lake Natron and usually takes place at night due to lack of shade. A guide is essential and porters recommended for carrying daypacks and plenty of water. Another option (for walkers with more time and looking for an offbeat experience) is to plan a longer trekking itinerary through the Ngorongoro Highlands, offering a chance to acclimatize to the climate – perhaps before an ascent of Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro.
Relaxing
If staying in the area, sipping a gin and tonic or cold beer on the shores of nearby Lake Natron at sunset is one of the best ways to relax and appreciate pure nature in an ancient African land.
Getting Around
Mt. Lengai lies approximately 250 km from Arusha. Private transport by 4WD is pretty much essential for visiting this remote area. Rough tracks lead to the start of the trail at the base of Mt. Lengai. The area does have a bush airstrip making access by private air charter an option.
