Barely 100km south of Hanoi, Ninh Binh is oft overlooked by travellers whose itineraries somewhat understandably take them south to Hue. They miss a real treat as Ninh Binh is the Vietnam of yesteryear – traditional village life with a backdrop of limestone crags rising from an emerald green sea of paddy fields rather than water as at Halong Bay – think Guilin in China. There are temples in caves, traditional architecture and a National Park to discover.

Ninh Binh town is the capital of the province of the same name. Whilst visitors are charmed by the stunning scenery at nearby Hoa Lu the jagged limestone outcrops once acted as natural defences for the former national capital. In the late 10th century, Vietnam was a fragmented land and had fallen under the control of 12 local warlords. The warrior Dinh Bo Linh defeated the warlords in 968 and reunited the country and called it Dai Co Viet. Hoa Lu was the capital of Dai Co Viet from 968 until 1010, when the Ly Dynasty established the capital at Thang Long (present-day Hanoi).

The new emperor chose Hoa Lu as his capital because it was protected by the Trang An mountains on three sides and by the Hoang Long River to the northwest.

Today it is a growing draw for visitors who come to explore its dramatic scenery and experience rural life.

Attractions in Ninh Binh

The town itself is pleasant enough providing a respite from city sightseeing if coming from Hanoi. Must sees and do’s in the area include Tam Coc boat trips, Bich Dong Pagoda and village life around Kenh Ga. Cuc Phuong National Park is also a worthwhile visit, with many hiking trails.

Activities in Ninh Binh

Activities in the area include walks in Cuc Phuong National Park, boat trips and relaxing in town.

Relaxing

Ninh Binh town has a thriving backpacker scene with people chilling put after exploring the dramatic local scenery – a great place to hand out.

Getting Around

The town is small enough to explore on foot, but you’ll need your own transport if heading out to the sights. Bikes can be hired locally as can motorbikes – if taking this option be careful as rural roads are poor.
