If the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City get too much head north to Nha Trang. Located near the mouth of the Cai River it’s an antidote to city life with the opportunity to explore underwater on diving safaris, take boat trips to offshore islands or simply relax on a 6km-long, coconut tree-lined beach.

Nha Trang was until 15 or so years ago another Vietnamese fishing town – the photogenic harbour can still be found to the south of town. In history the town was known as Kauthara under the Cham rulers and the Po Nagar Towers is a reminder of this.

It became known as a centre for marine research and science with the Nha Trang Oceanography Institution and the area has the Hon Mun Marine Protected Area, one of four such areas recognised by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The Alexandre Yersin Museum recognises the work done by the bacteriologist who lived here for 50 or so years.

Attractions in Nha Trang

Today the town is well-known for its splendid 6km long beach, as a centre for diving and for its offshore islands visited on boat trips. A visit to the Po Nagar Cham Towers 2km from town and Long Son Pagoda in town is a must; for a modern cultural highlight visit the Long Thanh Gallery where superb works of photographic art can be seen. The best time to enjoy Nha Trang’s beach is May to October, the dry season.

Activities in Nha Trang

A week could be spent in Nha Trang, relaxing on the beach, enjoying a few dives, taking boat trips and perhaps exploring by bike.

Relaxing

Boat tours are a great way to relax and see something of the area – snorkelling and enjoying a sumptuous seafood lunch before relaxing on a quiet island beach.

Getting Around

The town is small enough to be explored on foot or by bike; for those that prefer not to peddle there’s no shortage of cyclos.
