Capital of Jiangsu Province and lying on the Yangtse River Nanjing has a luminous cultural heritage. The city’s history started in 472BC and spans every dynasty since, several of whom made the city their capital. Nanjing has the longest city walls of anywhere in the world with Zhonghua Gate most famous.
It is also a city of despair. In 1839 the Opium War started and lead to the signing of the notorious Nanjing Treaty, the first of the 'Unequal Treaties' which ceded Hong Kong to the British for more than 100 years. In the Revolution of 1911 Dr.Sun Yat-Sen and his followers overthrew the Qing Dynasty.
