Nagoya, one of Japan’s major ports, is located on the Pacific coast in the Chubu region of Honshu island. As well as being a bustling commercial port the city has many sights which tell us of its history.
Nagoya Castle was built in 1612 for the Owari who were part of the ruling Tokugawa family. The castle is very famous for two magnificent Golden Orca on its roof which has become a symbol of Nagoya. The Tokugawa Art Museum exhibits the belongings of the Owari, including warrior armours, swords, tea utensils, costumes, poems, scrolls and maps.
Atsuta Shrine is known as the second-most admired shrine in Japan, after Ise Shrine. With 4,400 national treasures representing its 2,000 years' history, the shrine is also the venue for around 70 festivals throughout the year.
