There are several places to view the mountains from the rim of the Kathmandu Valley, however Nagarkot is considered amongst the very best spots to enjoy the spectacle. At 2,175m the settlement’s height gives it just what is needed for views of Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east with the entire Annapurna and Everest massifs visible.
Nagarkot sits 32km east of Kathmandu at 2,175m on the valley rim. A lookout tower south of the village provides a good spot but many of the hotels also have outstanding views. Early mornings between October and March bring the best conditions with the very best light and with little cloud. The elevation and geographical position combine to allow an uninterrupted view of Dhaulagiri out to the west, then the Annapurnas, Langtang, Everest and finally Kanchenjunga massifs.
Many people just stay overnight which is something of a shame as there are several rewarding walks in the area. Those recommended include Tharkot to Changu Narayan, Nagarkot to Sankhu or Banepa. A walk to Sundarijal leads the way into the pleasant Helambu Valley where great rambles can be enjoyed – all these are within easy reach of Kathmandu.
Activities in Nagarkot
Most people arrive late in the afternoon and stay overnight in one of the many lodges and hotels, then rise early for sunrise views.
Relaxing
The views from Nagarkot are what people come to the village for – get up early and what as the sun dusts the peaks with gold. Magic!
