The Tibetan-influenced region of Lo, known as Mustang in the west, lies north of Jomson in an area carved by the Kali Gandaki. A closed area until relatively recently the region is still totally unspoiled with mud brick villages and gompas and stunning mountain scenery.

The relaxing of regulations a little have meant that a steady trickle of hardy trekkers now make the journey into this amazing land. It’s not an easy place to visit as the trekking is hard and the climate is difficult with strong winds common, nor is it cheap as permits are expensive but the rewards for those lucky enough to visit are ample. This is truly the trek of a lifetime to a wholly unique corner of the world.

The trek permit starts from Kagbeni, 2 hours north of Jomson on the Kali Gandaki River. Reaching Jomson is a trek of around 4 days (preferable given the trekking to come) or a short flight from/to Pokhara, so a visit to Mustang is not necessarily a short affair, though it can be done in 16 or 17 days from the UK. Two trek permits are available – 10 days and 13 days. The 10-day permit is usually sufficient to allow for a thorough exploration of Lower Mustang and Lo Manthang.

The trekking season is March to November thus avoiding the bitterly cold winters; the area is renowned for its winds. Maximum elevation is around 4,300m. Two trails lead in with the physically tougher high route preferable, the other requiring wading through the river and walking on its boulder strew floodplain.

Note that this trek can only be made as part of an officially organised group: independent trekking is not permitted.

Relaxing

Find a spot out of the cold wind of Mustang and reflect that you're one of very few people privileged to make it to this out of the way spot.
