Sicily's highest mountain and Europe's highest active volcano, Mount Etna is the island's greatest natural attraction and currently stands at 3326m; its  height changes with each eruption, and more than 1200 square meters of Etna's surface is covered with solidified lava. It is not generally regarded as being particularly dangerous as thousands of people live on its slopes and in the surrounding areas, but it has been destructive in the past. Visits to its summit are not always possible but when permitted are a thrilling experience!

The first recorded eruption of Mount Etna was in 1500 BC and it has been active ever since, with its most violent eruption occurring in 1669 when millions of metric tons of lava poured from its crater. The lava flow at this time broke through the 18 meter high walls around the city of Catania and some 20,000 people were killed. More recently the greatest series of eruptions took place during 2002-2003 when a huge column of ash was thrown up that could easily be seen from space. Being one of the most active volcanoes in the world it is in an almost constant state of eruption.

Attractions in Mount Etna

The volcano itself is wonderful but the villages and towns that lie in sight of its flanks are wonderful to visit too.

Activities in Mount Etna

Two main activities are skiing in the winter months and superb hiking on the high barren high and wooded lower slopes are popular. There are also a number of smaller peaks on the slopes of Etna to explore as well as some interesting caverns. Exploration is definitely best done with an experienced local guide.

Relaxing

Take a breather at the top and look around at the great view – getting ready to descend in a hurry if necessary…!

Getting Around

There are several roads into Mount Etna park for easy access. For travellers without a car there is a bus service from Catania and occasional trains running from Catania to Riposto.
