Located on the slopes of Mount Caputo, Monreale overlooks the "Conca d'Oro," the stunning valley beyond Palermo. This hilltop town is famous for its world renowned cathedral with its 12th century mosaics and Sicily’s best mosaic galleries are located in the town along with craft and artisan shops which specialise in ceramics and mosaics.
Beginning as a village, Monreale started its expansion when the Norman Kings of Sicily chose the area as their hunting resort and built a palace here. It gained historical importance only in 1174 when King William II made the decision to build the famous Cathedral. Monreale became the seat of the metropolitan archbishop of Sicily, exerting a large influence over Sicily.
Attractions in Monreale
The Cathedral of Monreale is the greatest of all the monuments of the Norman kings in northern Sicily. Built in 1174 by King William II it was elevated to the rank of a metropolitan cathedral in 1182. While the outside of the cathedral is predominantly plain, the inside walls are covered with stunning mosaics, said to be one of the world's largest displays of this art. Directly next to the cathedral is the Benedictine abbey which was also founded by William II, its cloister is the main attraction with its richly decorated pillars.
