Mljet is an island south of the Peljesac Peninsula a couple of hours boat ride east of Korcula. The western side of the island is a wooded National Park containing two saltwater lakes, Malo Jezero and Veliko Jezero. In the latter there is a small island on which sits a 12th century Benedictine monastery. The lakes are popular laces to swim as the high saline concentration and warm waters (between 25°C-30°C) are said to have healing properties.
There are several villages on the island including Pomena, only 15 minutes walk from Malo Jezero in the National Park, Sobra, the main port and Polace, where there are several ruins dating from the 1st to the 6th centuries, including a 5th-century Roman palace and some fortifications.
Saplunara beach and bay on the southeast end of the island is a long unusually shaped bay with two sandy beaches surrounded by a thick pine tree forest.
