Located on Sarawak’s northwestern coast, Miri is an adventure city all of its own and gateway to Sarawak’s cultural, adventure and natural attractions. Within easy reach of the city are national parks, huge rivers, incredible cave systems and superb scuba diving. The city itself is a bustling commercial centre with lively and atmospheric local markets, scenic parks, beaches and excellent restaurants whilst at the same time being relaxed and casual.

Miri was just a small trading village at the mouth of the Miri River until 1910 when the Shell Oil company sank its first oil well on Canada Hill. The growth of the oil industry helped to transform it into a modern and prosperous town. The successful discovery of offshore oil in the 1970s turned Miri into a booming headquarters for North Sarawak's big drilling and oil refining operations. Today Miri is a cosmopolitan town – a great opportunity to meet the local people and is the gateway to Sarawak adventures.

Attractions in Miri

Situated on the top of the Canada Hill, the Grand Old Lady was the first oil well in Malaysia, which first struck oil in 1910.

The Taoist Temple (San Ching Tian), completed in the year 2000, is one of the largest Taoist temples in South East Asia whilst the Saberkas weekend market is held at Saberkas Commercial Centre, from Friday evening till Sunday noon.

Miri is fast becoming a popular dive destination due to an abundance of pristine patch reefs at depths from 7 to 30 metres; average visibility ranges from 10 to 30 metres. There are also some interesting wreck dives. The best time to dive is March to August, but diving is available all year round giving travellers the opportunity to see the most beautiful corals, turtles, variety of fishes and even the occasional shark.

Activities in Miri

Spend a couple of days exploring the city itself and a few days to make the most of the national parks, beaches, caves and diving.

Relaxing

Spend a few hours at the weekend market in the city, to take in the sights and immerse yourself in the local culture.

Getting Around
