Mercantour National Park covers around 685 km² of the Alpes de Haute Provence and Alpes-Maritimes regions including the valleys of Ubaye and Verdon. The park is an outstanding mountainous area with peaks reaching 3,000m and superb scenery such as Allos lake, the largest high altitude lake in Europe. Due to its location the park also has some Provencal characteristics such as olive trees and fields of lavender.

This virtually uninhabited park protects some 2,000 plant species and animal species such as chamois and marmots, ibex, deer and wild boar. Trekking is the most popular activity in the park with numerous trails through picturesque valleys and up to fantastic viewpoints in the mountainous areas.
