Masailand consists of the Masai Steppes and continues into the central province. The landscape is mainly savannah and thorn thicket but it also has a few rocky outcrops. The area is in both Kenya and Tanzania and is inhabited by the Maasai people.

The Maasai originated from the lower Nile valley (North-West Kenya) and began migrating south around the fifteenth century arriving in central Tanzania between the seventeenth and late eighteenth century. By the mid-nineteenth century they covered almost all of the Great Rift Valley.
