The now internationally-popular resort of Marmaris was, not long ago, a small fishing village dominated by its castle and a backdrop of steep mountains. Today it is popular amongst those seeking a vibrant nightlife and days by the pool.
The ancient name for Marmaris is Physkos and it developed as the harbour city of Karia. With a known history that dates back to the 9th century BCE900’s B.C. the city was under the sovereignty of Seleukos for some time during Hellenistic period, passing into Roman then Byzantine hands.
The Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent conquered the region in 1522 and he launched attacks on Greek Rhodes, capturing it the same year. Marmaris was named as Mimaras during the Ottoman Period, and was later referred to as Mermeris, which finally became Marmaris. Marmaris entered under the Italian sovereignity for a short period between 1919-1921. Afterwards, it remained as a fishermen and sponge fishing town until the 1980.
Today the town is a busy, popular resort famous for its many restaurants and many bars and nightclubs.
