Maremma lies in the south of Tuscany and comprises some of the most beautiful landscapes of the province. Home to the 100 square kilometer Parco Naturale della Maremma the region is a magnet for walkers and those that enjoy horseriding. Small, medieval villages along with the regional centre of Grossetto can be found here.

Dante mentioned Maremma in the Divine Comedy and it was once populated by the Butteri, cattle-breeders who used horses until recently, with a distinctive style of saddle. Hanging on to Tuscan traditions is something of a local speciality and this is one of the best places for visitors to come to to sample traditional Tuscan culture. There are a wealth beautiful medieval towns and villages, such as Scansano, a centre noted for Morellino di Scansano wine, made from locally-grown Morellino grapes.

The Alta Maremma region borders with the Province Siena and is characterised by many beautiful hilltop villages (Civitella Marittima, Roccastrada, Roccatederighi, Sassofortino, Monte Massi, Massa Marittima, Cinigiano, Campagnatico and Pari), remeniscent of the Siena area which lies within striking distance. Grosseto is regarded as the capital of the Maremma.

The hills of the Upper Maremma can be divided into three areas: the Area del Tufo ("the tufa area"), the Colline Metallifere ("the hills that produce metals" - a reference the the mining that was a major sopurce of income) and the hills on the border with Siena - historically the heart of the Etruscan Empire.

The coast comprises of some 160km of beaches and superb coastline.
