Located at the heat of the Amazon Rainforest, at the confluence of the Rio Negro and Rio Solimões, this is the gateway to one of the world's most impenetrable rainforests.
Manaus began as a rubber exporter, but is no longer an out-of-the way commercial centre. Today Manaus is a culturally thriving city located on the Amazon River in Brazil's western Amazon jungle. No other city in the world can offer world-class experience of Manaus, with its grand Teatro Amazonas Opera House, in such close proximity to the remote ecological ecosystems of the Amazon Rainforest.
There's plenty of wildlife to be explored at the Parque Ecólogico do January or Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden without even leaving the city. But to venture out of Manaus to stay in one of the many lodges of the area, or sail along the Amazon itself, is to follow in the footsteps of native tribes, missionaries, and explorers.
Attractions in Manaus
Manaus stands as a landmark of aboriginal culture and Amazonian history. The city offers numerous museums on thid theme.
Located a thousand miles upstream from the coast, Manaus is situated on the Negro (black) river a few miles before it meets the Rio Solimões and the two rivers run side-by-side in segregated colours before forming the Amazon River. A visit to the ‘meeting of the waters’ here is a popular excursion.
After exploring the rain forest, uncover Manaus's underrated centres for art. The Teatro Amazonas is the city's main attraction, while the Rio Negro Palace and Centro de Artes Chaminé are important centres for art with exhibitions, concerts, and theatre.
