Male, the capital and largest city of the Maldives located on the southern edge of the North Male atoll, is the main commercial and administrative centre. The city covers the whole of the island with buildings, paved roads, parks and main streets lined with shops and offices, shaded by trees. The city is surrounded by a seawall which leads to a new harbour on the southwest side of the island.
The northern waterfront is the main area of activity with the Male fish market selling many varieties including tuna and the Local market selling a range of fruit and vegetables. Some of the many other attractions of the city include the Islamic Centre with its golden dome, the most noticeable landmark of the city and the National Museum which gives an insight into the rich culture and history of this island nation.
Male is the hub from which boats and planes transfer travellers to the surrounding atolls with their fantastic island resorts and dive sites.
