Mahebourg is the closest town to Mauritius’s International Airport. It is situated in the bay of Grand Port in the south-east of the island. It is a good start point from which to take a trip out to Île aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve. It also has a couple of small attractions of its own.

The town was founded in 1805 and was named after the French Governor Mahe de Labourdonnais. It is now one of Mauritius’s main fishing centres.

Attractions in Mahebourg

The main attractions in Mahebourg are the Naval Museum (housed in a French colonial mansion where in 1810 both the French and English naval commanders were taken after being wounded in battle), the Rault Biscuit Factory and its church.

Activities in Mahebourg

There is no beach in Mahebourg, but you can travel the short distance to Blue Bay or Pointe D’Esny for watersports and relaxation.

Getting Around

Mahebourg is serviced by local buses from all directions, with frequent services to Port Louis.
