Nestled in a deep valley hemmed in by high mountain ranges, Mae Hong Son has long been isolated from the outside world. Virtually covered with mist throughout the year, adding to its mystique, the town is famous for its elephants, beautiful rivers and hill tribes.

Established in the early 19th century Mae Hong Son was formerly governed from Chiang Mai and these officials organised the rounding up of wild elephants which were then trained before being sent to the capital for work, thus its fame in this area was born.

The Thai Yai culture is strong here: they may at one time have been the most numerous of the ethnic Thai tribes that stretch across Southeast Asia and they have had a strong influence on the province, as can be seen in its architecture, with living quarters usually built with tall floors and low roofs, the sizes differing according to ones social status and position. The homes of ordinary folks usually have one single roof level, while those of the local aristocrats have two or more levels forming a castle-like shape. An interesting feature of the Thai Yai style is the perforated designs along the eaves which are an architectural identity of the area.

Attractions in Mae Hong Son

Today Mae Hong Son is well connected to the rest of the country by both road and air and attracts travellers who come to enjoy the mountains, raft its rivers and visit hilltribe villages of the region, including the famous long-necked Padaung people. The town has a morning market and several unique wats to visit – Wat Phai Doi, Wat Jong Kham and Wat Jong Klang being the 3 most important. There are the Pha Sua waterfall, boat trips on the Pai River and hot springs at Pha Bong to discover – along with elephant rides into the jungle.

Activities in Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son is the perfect base from which to mount forays into the surrounding countryside. A trek here is a worthwhile experience and will give you a memorable insight into the region, its landscapes and people. Allow 2/3 days to explore the town and its surroundings; longer if trekking.

Relaxing

There are several bars in town which make great places to relax in.

Getting Around

The town is easily navigable on foot or by bike but for any out-of-town adventures you’ll have to hire a motorbike (not recommended; roads are potholed and dangerous) or make arrangements with a Travel Expert – easily done in town or through a specialist in Bangkok.
