Lythrodontas is a village located 25 kilometres south of the capital, built at 420 metres above sea level. The village is well-known for its olive groves mainly cultivated for oil production. The scenery around Lythrodontas is rich in wild vegetation, mostly pine trees and thyme. It is also rich in cultivations of citrus and other type of fruits, vines, vegetables, pulses, walnuts, and grain.
The area was originally settled in the Hellenistic period; its name derives from its first Byzantine inhabitant Erithrodontas. The main features of the village are the two stone-built dam locks and the monastery of Profitis Elias.
