Established in the Middle Ages, the Old Town (Stare Miasto) of Lublin is one of the finest urban complexes of its kind in Poland. It stands proudly on a picturesque headland above the valleys of the Bystrzyca and Czechówka rivers, offering an unmatched panoramic view of the whole ancient town, most of which has been preserved in its original state.
The first traces of the settlement date back to the 6th century. In the past Lublin was both a well-fortified town, defending Poland against Tartarian and Russian attacks, and an important commercial centre where the North-South and East-West European routes met giving rise to a unique meeting point of Eastern and Western cultures and religions.

One of the highlights of Lublin is the 14th century Holy Trinity Chapel, located in the Royal Castle. The Krakow Gate (Brama Krakowska), Lublin's architectural symbol, has for centuries served as the main entrance to the Old Town, whilst the Trinitarian Tower is one of the most characteristic city landmarks.
The Market Square (Rynek), the Old Town Hall and the surrounding burgher houses, narrow and winding streets and alleys, the Dominican Church and Monastery Complex, Po Farze Square and Grodzka provide many other local attractions in the town.
