In the northwest of the country Luang Nam Tha (Luang Namtha) is attracting more and more travellers keen to explore a rugged, remote and beautiful mountain area. Close to the town is Nam Ha National Protected Area, home to several tribal peoples as well as elusive and threatened wildlife species. Aside from walking there are good cycling, rafting and kayaking opportunities as well as an interesting older part of town to discover.
Like several other areas in northern Laos Luang Nam Tha sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The town is split in 2 following the ravages of the war; the more interesting old town lies 7km away from the new town, site of most accommodation and travellers services.
Outside town the province (of the same name) is relatively little-visited and is home to many ethnic groups. Steadily travellers have discovered the region’s charms and now it is ideally positioned to take advantage of its growing reputation as an eco-adventure centre, with several reliable and reputable operators offering sustainable activities.
Attractions in Luang Nam Tha
The town and immediate environs only a few sights - Luang Nam Tha Museum, That Phum Phuk stupa and a waterfall at Ban Nam Dee village; the older part of town is also interesting to wander around. The area is threaded with rivers and the Nam Ha National Protected Area (NPA) lies a short distance away and these provide the focus for visitors’ activities.

A cycle ride into the countryside meeting people along the way is one of the most rewarding of all ways to relax. Afterwards the food in the many restaurants in town is authentic northern-Laos cuisine – perfect.
