Lake Bunyonyi is located near Kabale in southwestern Uganda. For travellers seeking an idyllic retreat, the chance to canoe between islands, relax and unwind in a tranquil lakeside setting, then Lake Bunyonyi is the place to head for. A canoe trip to Bwama Island to visit the small school is a popular local activity.

Lake Bunyonyi is reputed to be one of the deepest lakes in Africa with depths varying up to 900 metres. In reality though, a more realistic estimate is around 50 metres. It is about 25 km long by 7 km wide with 29 islands within the lake. There are no fish in the lake but it does contain a large population of freshwater crayfish. The surrounding hills are the home of the Bakiga people who are cultivators by tradition.

Attractions in Lake Bunyonyi

At a temperature of about 25 degrees Celcius and with no bilharzia, the lake is an ideal place for a swim. Dugout canoe excursions are available and a visit to the weekly colourful Rutindo market is a must, when a flotilla of canoes bring local produce across the lake to sell. Pygmy traders from Rwanda can often be seen trading their produce at Hakekuba's Saturday market.

Relaxing

Many tranquil spots can be found around the lakeshore for rest and contemplation. This is a particularly good spot to spend a couple of days after completing a western safari or gorilla trek.

Getting Around

Lake Bunyonyi is located south of Kabale, 13 km away, a straightforward walk (about 3 hrs) or short cycle ride (bikes can be hired in Kabale) for those without private transport. Taxis from Kabale cost around US$7 and take just over 20 minutes.
