The major city on the Caribbean coast of Honduras, La Ceiba is a vibrant city bursting with hospitality and charm. It is a gateway to some of the most stunning natural beauty in the country.

Providing a base from which to venture into various wildlife reserves, La Ceiba may well be a future hub of ecotourism.

La Ceiba has become the gateway to the Bay Islands of Roatan, Utila and Gaunaja. With local flights and ferries taking tourists to and from the islands on a regular basis. Those wishing to visit the protected Cayos Cochinos, small keys officially part of the Bay Islands but much closer to La Ceiba, need to pass through here. La Ceiba also provides access to the many important national parks on the mainland such as Pico Bonito.

The town gets its name from a species of tree found along the coastline. It is said that one particular tree provided such a welcome rest area, due to its plentiful shade for workers on a nearby dock, that the town that grew up around it became known as La Ceiba.

Attractions in La Ceiba

The emphasis in this area is on eco-tourism, both inland – the Pico Bonito National Park and the Cuero & Salado Wildlife Park - and offshore, at the Cayos Cochinos Marine Reserve

Even the man-made attractions are in celebration of this natural abundance, with a Butterfly Museum and the Fig Tree Medical Center.

Activities in La Ceiba

The Cayos Cochinos offer spectacular diving and snorkelling, while onshore there are great hiking opportunities, such as along the Rio Maria or in the Pico Bonito National Park, as well as excellent rafting and kayaking on the Rio Cangrejal.

Relaxing

Relax on a beach in the Cayos Cochinos, one of the most unspoiled locations in the continent.

Getting Around

Journeys within the city, when distances discourage walking, can easily and cheaply be made by taxi. Ferries operate to the Bay Islands and the Cayos Cochinos. Travel outside of the city is made easy by a central bus terminal.
