Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, is located on the west coast of Peninsula Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur was originally a mining settlement in the late 1800s where tin was discovered at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers. Today, Kuala Lumpur or KL as it is more commonly known is home to 1.5 million people within the city, and more than 6 million in the surrounding metropolitan area.
KL has plenty to offer in terms of sights and shopping. Not to be missed is the Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world which can be found right next to the bustling Suria KLCC shopping mall at the heart of the city. Another wonderful sight are the Batu Caves, which are one of the holiest Hindu shrines in Malaysia. Aquaria KLCC in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre houses over 5,000 types of tropical fishes and at the very centre of the city is the small tropical forest known as Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve. The Istana Negara is the official royal residence of the King and Queen of Malaysia.
Due to the many different ethnic groups in the city there are Hindu temples such as the Sri Kandaswamy Kovil and the Sri Mahamariamman temples, the National Mosque, also called the Masjid Negara and the Chinese also have their local Chinatown, with a Chinese night market thriving on Petaling Street.
