The town of Kotohira, located on Shikoku island is best known as the site of Shikoku's largest shrine complex, the Kotohira Shrine

The shrine sits amid the wooded hills of Kotohira and is comprised of a main hall which stands at the top of almost 800 steps. Another 1,368 stone steps take you into Inner Shrine. From the front of the Main Sanctuary there is a fantastic view of the Sanuki Plain. The shrine is said to protect people's health and guard against evil and visited by worshippers from all over Japan.

Also located within the shrine complex are the Asahi-no-yashiro Shrine, Omote-shoin (formal drawing room), Oku-shoin (inner drawing room), Houmotsu-kan (treasure house) and a museum.
