Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, is the capital city of the state of West Bengal. Calcutta was the capital city of British India until 1911, when the struggles for Indian independence lead the British to transfer the capital to Delhi. In 2001, Calcutta was officially renamed Kolkata.
During the British colonial era from 1700-1912, numerous palatial mansions were built all over the city. Architectural influences included Gothic, Baroque, Roman, Oriental and Islamic and much of this variety of style originates from European styles and tastes imported by the British as well as the Portuguese and the French. Some of the major buildings of this period have been declared as heritage structures.
Government House was built in the early 19th century and was once the seat of the Viceroys of India. It later became, and still is, the residence of the Governor of Bengal.
