A small isolated island situated 45 km to the north of Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Tao was once used as a prison for instigators of the Bavordet coup. The island is famous for its rich coral reefs and is a favourite spot for those that want to learn to dive: with great diving and snorkelling and a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere Ko Tao is the place to head if you seek a quieter Thai beach experience.
Koh Tao, an island of little more than 21 sq km, is located some 70 km east of the mainland between Suratthani and Chumphon. Koh Tao translates as ‘Turtle Island’ and initially was not inhabited, with just the occasional fisherman looking for shelter in a storm coming ashore.
From 1933 to 1947 the island was used as a political prison and in the same year brothers from the neighbouring Koh Pha Ngan reached the island and claimed themselves a good piece of land on today's Sairee Beach: the first generation of today's community had arrived.
The first travellers arrived in the early eighties and today the island is well-know as a place to relax and learn to dive amongst those seeking a quieter spot. The main town is Ban Mae Hat, a small place on the west coast where the boats dock; Sairee beach is a kilometre or so north and is the most popular beach.
Attractions in Ko Tao
Most people come here to dive or to learn how to dive – there are no cultural attractions such as temples to see. The visibility is usually excellent and Ko Tao is one of Thailand's finest diving spots with main attractions such as White Rock, Shark Island, Chumphon Pinnacle, Green Rock and Sail Rock.
Activities in Ko Tao
Learning to dive here is both affordable and a great introduction to the sport. There are a number of dive schools, some good, some not so good – choose carefully. Other activities include watersports and – amazingly – bowling (local style you’ll be pleased to hear).
Relaxing
There are a number of low-key bars to enjoy on Ko Tao – perfect after a day’s snorkelling or diving.
Getting Around
Use songthaews or walk – nowhere is very far away.
