The ante-thesis of Pattaya and the other lively resorts of the Gulf of Thailand, Ko Samet’s historic isolation has resulted in an relatively under-developed island-resort where white-sand beaches squeak under you feet as you explore. There is development but this being a Marine National Park it is limited, mainly to the north; forget dozens of discos and nightclubs banging tunes out all night – chill out watching sunset and enjoying a lingering meal, especially at the quieter beaches.
The island was famous long before the advent of tourism, being immortalised by the classical Thai poet, Sunthon Phu, who set part of his epic 'Phra Aphaimani' on the island, where the of hero the tale defeats a giant by playing a magic flute.
Now well established as a popular destination for overseas visitors and weekenders from Bangkok, Ko Samet remains that elusive thing – an accessible paradise. Lying 6.5km. offshore and appearing as a thin sliver of land shaped roughly like a nail with a sloping flat head, Ko Samet is less developed than its popularity might suggest and remains a picturesque island with many attractive coves, bays and some excellent beaches.
Accommodation is simple and mostly bungalow style, concentrated mainly on the northern and eastern sides; the north is livelier and the island becomes quieter and more remote towards the southern tip. Weekends see the crowds from Bangkok descend and prices for accommodation double; visit midweek for the best deals and experience.
Attractions in Ko Samet
The beaches are famous for being made up of powder-white sand. Days are spent sunbathing, taking on-beach massages and on the busier beaches deciding if you want to go diving/snorkelling or take to banana boats and their ilk. At night relax in the numerous low-key restaurants and bars.
Activities in Ko Samet
There are more conventional beachside activities towards the north at Hat Sai Kaew and in the centre of the island at Vongduern, both on the east coast. Walking is popular given the small size of the island.
Relaxing
Enjoy a relaxing massage on the beach, sipping a cold drink and eating a freshly peeled pineapple.
Getting Around
Get around on foot or by songthaew.
