Quieter and more laid back than its better-known neighbour Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan has been receiving visitors for a few years now. Its relative isolation mean a more determined effort is needed to reach the island – the reward is quieter beaches and a more relaxed atmosphere. That is, all except at the time of a full-moon when the famous full-moon party brings crowds of party goers keen to let their hair down.
Located half an hour or so north of Ko Samui Ko Pha Ngan has always been quieter than its neighbour. There is no airport unlike Samui – the only way here is by boat. Accommodation has always been and remains simple – bungalows on the beach are made from woven rattan and are fairly basic, attracting backpackers rather than tourists, though there are more upmarket alternatives as well.
Attractions in Ko Pha Ngan
The island’s beaches are beautiful as you would expect and are connected to the main town, Thong Sala, by road, track or boat. Hat Rin beach in the southeast is most popular and the place to come to party, and, whilst the full-moon brings most people its lively at all times. Hat Khuat or Bottle Beach is quieter yet still has some life to it whilst beaches such as Hat Sadet, Hat Thian and Ao Thong Reng are quieter still.
Away from the beaches interesting attractions include the hilltop temple of Wat Khao Tham, Than Sadet Waterfall and Namtok Phaeng National Park.
Activities in Ko Pha Ngan
There’s plenty to occupy your time on Ko Pha Ngan as the island is surprisingly large. There are some great walks to discover and guides are available for example for the walk up Khao Ra, the 620m high highest point of the island.
Scuba diving and snorkelling are both possible and there are the traditional ‘activities’ of yoga and massage. As with Chiang Mai, Phuket and elsewhere cooking schools have opened up – a great way to spend a few hours. Watersports such as jet-skiing, sea-kayaking are plentiful at busier beaches.
Relaxing
As ever the beaches are the place to chill-out, but those in search of a non-stop night of trance music should head to Had Rin at the full-moon. Parties here are massive.
Getting Around
Exploring Ko Pha Ngan can be a bit problematical as it’s less developed than Samui and thus transport options such as vehicle hire are more restricted. Motorcycles should always be avoided – they are downright dangerous anywhere in Thailand. The best way of getting around is by songthaews, boat and on foot.
