Klaksvík is the second largest town of the Faroe Islands, located on Borðoy, one of the northernmost islands.
Klaksvik has an important harbour with fishing industry and a modern fishing fleet. As Klaksvík is situated around a very well-protected bay and was approved as a winter berth for seagoing vessels, many skippers and their crews moved to Klaksvík, and from that time Klaksvík started to develop and became the main fishing port in the islands.
Originally, four farms were located where Klaksvik is now. In time, they grew into four villages that finally merged to form the town of Klaksvik. What triggered the development of the town was the establishment of a centralised store for all the northern islands.
The Norðoyatunnilin, a submarine tunnel to Leirvík, was opened in April 2006.
Activities in Klaksvik
Travellers can enjoy boat trips; take a hike to the northermost point of the Faroes and Europe's highest promontory "Enniberg;" and travel by bus to the island of Kunoy, the highest of all the islands.
During summer, the town is festively decorated as it hosts many music events, exhibitions, and sports competitions.
Getting Around
In April 2006, the 5,6 km long underwater tunnel (150m beneath sea level) between Klaksvík and Leirvík was opened to the public. It now takes approximately one hour to travel direct from Tórshavn and Vágar airport to the northern islands.
