Located in the geographical heart of Rwanda, Kigali is not only the capital of the country but also the main international gateway. Blessed with a moderate high altitude climate it is also very conveniently situated within 3 hours' drive of Rwanda's main places of interest, providing an ideal springboard from which to explore the country. Sprawling over verdant slopes, Kigali has the feel of a garden city with leafy avenues and a compact low-rise city centre.
Founded just over a hundred years ago in 1907 under German colonial rule, Kigali only became capital in 1962 at the time of Rwandan independence. Chosen for its more central location over Butare, the then colonial seat of power, the city has grown rapidly and is now the leading economic, cultural and political centre of the country.
Attractions in Kigali
Kigali has few attractions of note however the city centre surrounds a busy and typically colourful market, with local craft stalls aplenty. Kigali also has an atmospheric Muslim quarter which is well worth a visit.

Taste a cup of local Rwandan tea in a shady city centre cafe or laze by a hotel pool after a visit to the bustling market.
Getting Around
For those without their own private transport, a taxi booked through your hotel is the safest and most reliable way to get around the city.
