Kielce is the capital city of the Holy Cross Voivodship (Swietokrzyskie); it has a rich and colourful history shown through its numerous historical attractions from palaces to museums. However, there are also plenty of outdoor opportunities here in the Holy Cross Mountains and the city’s parks from biking to hiking.
Kielce’s history dates back to the 10th century and it gained city status in 1364 and today it is a city that is developing rapidly and holds much importance within its region due to being the capital of the Swietokrzyskie region.
Attractions in Kielce
As in all the major Polish cities, Kielce has many attractions of both cultural and historical importance. Visit historic buildings such as the Holy Trinity Church; built between 1640 and 1644 and the Palace of Krakow Bishops; built in the Baroque style it was once a summer residence and now houses a museum with a gallery full of important Polish paintings. There are also several other museums including the Toy Museum and the Stefan Zeromski Museum. Or if it is natural attractions that you prefer to see then head to Kadzielna Gorge or one of the five geological nature reserves.
Activities in Kielce
Head to Sienkiewicza Street with its shops, department stores, historical buildings and monuments for a spot of retail therapy or perhaps check out the old town market. Then take a walk in the city’s stunning park or head into the Holy Cross Mountains for mountain biking and hiking.
Relaxing
Relax by day in the beautiful surroundings of the city’s park; Municipal Park, with its fountains and monuments. Then by night check out the cinemas and theatres such as the Kieleckie Centrum Kultury Theatre.
Getting Around
Much of the city is navigable on foot; however, buses, trains and taxis are all widely available.
