Internationally regarded, a natural World Heritage Site and a major draw for travellers Khao Yai National Park is one of the easiest ways of getting close to Thailand’s natural heritage. There are many important plants bird and animal species within the park which can be explored on foot or even on overnight stays. Several mountains with peaks ranging from 800m to 1351m asl gives Khao Yai a cool climate area, even in summer – perfect for exploring.

Khao Yai covers an area of 2,168 square kilometers over the Phanom Dong Rak mountain range and stretches over 4 provinces and became Thailand’s first national park on 18th September 1962. It is comprised of mixed forests and rainforests with some wide plains and grasslands interspersed with verdant forests.

Attractions in Khao Yai National Park

The park has numerous butterfly species and over 293 species of birds use Khao Yai as a feeding ground, including the park’s famous hornbills. The most frequently spotted animal is the deer that grazes on grass plains and sometimes come to be fed around the park office but other animals include wild elephant, sun bear, wild boar, monkey, tiger and gaur. There are two watchtowers at Mo Singto and Nong Phak Chi and visitors are allowed to use them between 08:00hrs and 18:00hrs.

Activities in Khao Yai National Park

Khao Yai can be explored on foot as there are over 20 trekking trails, each different in both natural beauty and distance; while some trails like the Kong Kaeo trail and the Kilometer 33 trail (Thanarat Road-Nong Phak Chi) take 1-2 hours to complete, others like the Nang Rong-Khao Yai trail, Samo Pun trail or Kho Yo 4 Unit-Wang Heo waterfall trail require overnight stays. Information and guides can be obtained from the tourist service centre who will be able to guide you to stunning waterfalls. Night safaris can also be arranged.
