Ideally situated on the banks of the Vistula River in eastern Poland, Kazimierz Dolny is one of the oldest towns of the Lublin region. For over two centuries it has been a favourite place of artists and summer residents and now attracts between 1 to 1.2 million tourists a year! The best time to appreciate the beauty of this town may well be out of peak season!

Kazimierz Dolny enjoyed its greatest prosperity in the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, due to the trade in grain conducted along the Vistula river. It become an economic backwater after that trade declined, and this freeze in economic development enabled the town to preserve its Renaissance urban plan and appearance.

Attractions in Kazimierz Dolny

Attractions in town include the castle and its defensive tower, which guarded the passage across the Vistula. Both these structures, together with the parish church, the Great Market and the Reformati cloister, make up the main scenic part of the town. They run parallel to the Vistula, which cuts a spectacular gorge in this area.

The cobble-stone Market with two wooden-roof wells is surrounded by decorative frontages of burgher houses. Dedicated to Saints John the Baptist and Bartholomew the Apostle, the church was built during 1586-89 and 1610-13 on top of the lofty walls of an earlier Gothic temple.

Activities in Kazimierz Dolny

For over 30 years Kazimierz has also been host to an important folklore event in Poland, the Festival of Folk Bands and Singers. Every June both market squares of the town on the Vistula turn into a stage for a review of authentic country vocal and instrumental music, accompanied by a unique fair of folk arts and crafts.

In July, Kazimierz sees the arrival of cinema lovers for the Summer Film Festival. For a whole week under two big tents, and in the evenings under open skies, there are projections of films selected from the catalogues of numerous foreign and national festivals, retrospections of old pictures and presentations of independent artists.

Relaxing

Numerous restaurants and cafes provide many opportunities to sit back and enjoy the beauty of this riverside town.

Getting Around

The centre of Kazimierz is quite small and can easily be explored on foot.
