Being the largest ecosystem in South Africa, Karoo National Park is home to a fascinating diversity of endemic wildlife that you will certainly enjoy discovering. The area is mostly semi-desert and is well known for its isolation as well as being home to many desert mammals and endemic species. Here you can enjoy spotting numerous wildlife species as well as participating in scenic drives.

Karoo National Park is a wildlife reserve in the isolated Karoo area of the Western Cape, situated about 10 kilometres from the picturesque town of Beaufort West and 500 kilometres north of Cape Town. The park was established as a wildlife reserve in 1979.

Attractions in Karoo National Park

The national park is home to many endemic species. Among them are the Black Eagle, the Black Rhinoceros, the Riverine Rabbit, Tortoise, Springbok, Cape Mountain Zebra, Acacia Pied Barbet, Red-eyed Bulbul, Karoo Scrub Robin, Cape Robin-chat, Chestnut-vented Tit-babbler, Cape rock elephant-shrew, Cape Fox, Cape Clawless Otter, Kudu, Saunders' vlei rat and Eland. 

Activities in Karoo National Park

You can enjoy scenic drives along the picturesque Klipspringer Pass, game viewing, nature and 4x4 trails, bird-watching and also the 400 metres long Karoo Fossil Braille Trail for handicapped visitors.

Relax by staying in one of the park's lodges where you can sleep amidst spectacular scenery to really appreciate the area's natural beauty.

Getting Around

Car hire facilities are located at airports and major cities and you can get around the park by foot or four wheel drive.
