Rudyard Kipling based his ‘Jungle Book’ on the sal and bamboo forests that line the ravines of dramatic Kanha National Park. Along with its near neighbours Bandhavgarh and Pench, Kanha is one of the best places in the world to see the royal Bengal tiger in the wild.
Kanha is located in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh and extends over an area of over 1,940sq kms. The major feature of this region's interesting topography is the horseshoe shape valley and the Surpan River meanders through Kanha's grasslands that cover the extensive plateau. Steep rocky escarpments along the edges offer breathtaking views of the valley.
Kanha was designated a National Park in 1955 and forms the core of the Kanha Tiger Reserve, created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The Park's landmark achievement is the preservation of the rare swamp deer which has been saved from extinction thanks to the efforts of the Park and its staff.
Extraordinary though it is, people come to Kanha to spot tigers. The large amount and diversity of prey, such as chital, have ensured that the tiger has a strong base here. Perhaps the most striking features of this region are the open grassy meadows, where sightings of blackbuck, swamp deer and sambhar – also prey for tigers – are common.
Attractions in Kanha National Park
Along with the tiger the park has much to recommend it. The open grasslands are the perfect habitat for animals such as python, nilgai, bear, jackal, porcupine, bison, hyena, jungle cat, barking deer and more.
Birdlife too is prolific with species such as egret, pea fowl, spotted parakeets, papihas, rollers, bee-eaters, hoopoes, drongos, warblers, kingfishers, woodpeckers, finches, orioles, owls and fly catchers all to be found.
Activities in Kanha National Park
The park is best explored on a safari where a trained and experienced driver-guide leads you through the park on an early morning or late afternoon expedition to spot wildlife. Sightings of tiger are relatively common and even if none are seen a safari is an unforgettable experience.
Relaxing
There is accommodation around the periphery of the park – a great place to relax in between safaris. Accommodation is often set in extensive grounds with its own bird-watching and animal spotting opportunities.
