Kangaroo Island, near the tip of South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, is Australia's third largest island, 155 km long by 55 km wide. With 450 kilometres of coastline it offers spectacular pristine beaches and abundant wildlife. Civilisation and wilderness meet there in harmony, and sea lions, penguins, dolphins, koalas and kangaroos live in a natural environment.

Kangaroo Island was part of the Australian mainland until sea levels rose 10,000 years ago. Now, its isolation means it is a safe home to abundant, undisturbed wildlife. Kangaroo Island has a wild, untouched beauty that has been preserved from overdevelopment and excessive tourism.

Original flora and fauna remain abundant, cliffs and beaches are unsullied, and many roads are deliberately left unsealed. Kangaroo Island's plant catalogue lists 891 species, as well as approximately 250 that have been introduced from other parts of the world.

Attractions in Kangaroo Island

Visit the colony of 600 rare sea lions at Seal Bay wildlife sanctuary, walk on the beautiful Bales Beach, visit Flinders Chase National Park with its rugged coastline and excellent wildlife. Or the American River township in the north which was named after American sailors who moored in the river in 1803. Tidal flats, seasonal wildflowers and sheltered beaches make it a haven for wildlife and holidays. Visit Stokes and Emu Bays for long white sand beaches.

Activities in Kangaroo Island

If you want to leave the mundane world behind you and go for a long bush walk among prolific flora and fauna, Kangaroo Island is the perfect setting. The special thing about it is that because of its isolation from the mainland, much of Kangaroo Island woodland and coastline is pristine with abundant flora and fauna, offering a rare bushwalking, camping and wildlife-spotting experience. For the fit and prepared Kangaroo Island offers a great number of walking possibilities.

Guided walks are also extremely rewarding on Kangaroo Island. You can take one into the Kelly Hill Caves, or if you are more adventurous, you can organise a more in-depth caving experience. You can also take a guided walk through the seal colony at Seal Bay, and take a longer walk at your own pace along Bales Beach. Take a four wheel drive bike through the bushland, surf the sand dunes of Little Sahara, or swim with the dolphins.

Relaxing

Ensure you make time to relax on some of the islands' spectacular unspoilt beaches.

Getting Around

To get to the island coaches operate from Adelaide to Cape Jervis, then take a 45-minute crossing by SeaLink ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw , you will feel the excitement mount as Kangaroo Island comes into view. SeaLink operates large, luxury passenger and vehicle ferries between mainland South Australia and Kangaroo Island and offers a range of convenient sailing times, up to 12 each day during peak periods. Coaches operate on the island to connect with the ferries and take you to various destinations on the island.

South Australia spoils you with opportunities to observe and interact with Native Australian wildlife. But the premium destination has got to be Kangaroo Island, just a 30 minute flight from Adelaide, the capital, and is a wildlife paradise. It can easily lay claim to Australia's answer to the Galapgos, due to the vast arrya and huge amount of wildlife on the Island
A third of the Island is made up of National Parks and it is the best place in Australia to find Australia’s unique wildlife existing in there natural habitat. On my short visit we saw kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, eagles, Black Cockatoo's, penguins, Sealions, Fur seals and platypus.
3 of the most amazing experience was to walk on the beach amongst the wild seals, with our guide, and being able to watch them frolic in the ocean or pratise their fighting for the king of the beach title.
We also got to see the Rare Yellow-tailed Black cockatoo flying in formation in the cntre of the island as we stopped at Stranrear homestead for Morning tea.
And finally at our Lunch stop on one of the days, while the BBQ Fish was cooking we got a visit from the a Tammar Wallaby, up close. Notoriously shy animals this guy wnated to see what we were up to so cam quite close for a Photo op.
So get out there and visit this island, make it part of your holiday to Australia. Great for wildlife, sealife and birdlife and added to great fresh food and wine can be found to boot.
