Kagoshima sits on the west shore of the stunning Kinko Bay and is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture on Kyushu island. The city is overlooked by the magnificent Mount Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes and the landmark of Kagoshima. Minor eruptions take place often with the last major eruption taking place in 1960.
Another highlight of Kagoshima is the Iso-teien Garden which was designed in 1660 by the Shimazu lord of the time.
Kagoshima also has numerous museums, including City Art Museum, Kagoshima Prefectural Museum of Culture and the Kagoshima Prefectural Museum of science and natural history.
