The largest and arguably most splendid mosque in the whole of India, the Jama Masjid along with the Red Fort is testament to the great architectural imagination of the Mughals.
With a courtyard capable of holding 25,000 devotees construction of the Jama Masjid was begun in 1644 and when completed in 1658 was acknowledged as the finest religious extravagance of Emperor Shah Jahan, the Mughal who built the Taj Mahal and Delhi’s Red Fort. The highly decorative mosque has three great gates, four towers and two 40m-high minarets, the southernmost of which can be climbed, constructed from red sandstone and white marble.
Relaxing
The Jama Masjid is a great place to sit in and relax, its high walls providing shade during hot summer days. After your visit why not head into the lanes around Chandni Chowk for a cup of masala chai?
Getting Around
The Jama Masjid is easily included on a tour of Old Delhi.
