Several hours south of Lima, along the Pan American highway, lie the towns of Pisco, Paracas and Ica. Here the most northerly part of the dry, barren Atacama Desert meets with the cool Pacific currents and the fertile valleys of the Andean foothills. There are many reasons to stop in this region on the journey south towards Nasca, if not least to sample Peru’s national spirit that is produced here, Pisco, main ingredient of the famous Pisco Sour.
The Ica region is rich in agriculture and fisheries. It is home to Peru’s largest port south of Lima, as well as the country’s largest concentration of vineyards and wineries which are used to produce wine and Pisco.
The Paracas National Reserve contains a rich coastal eco-system that includes desert, beaches, islands, cliffs and ocean. Host to flamingoes, elikans, penguins, dolphins, sea lions, and an enormous variety of fish and crustaceans, it is a short boat trip to the captivating Ballestas Islands, a protected area of cormorants and sea lions.
This area was the heart of the Paracas Culture (700 BC), and the Ica Museum displays artifacts from these times. Nearby is the desert oasis of Huacachina, a relaxing spot to unwind and the valley of Chincha, which is known as the birthplace of Afro-Peruvian music.
