There really is no place in Vietnam like Hoi An. Its atmosphere, enhanced by vehicle-free streets, is sublime; its riverside setting photogenic - a treat for anyone looking for a few days (and for many a few weeks!) to rest up. Here you can slip to China Beach 5km away, fish on the river, wander art galleries and enjoy having clothes made to measure.
The highlight though are perhaps the beautiful buildings that line the streets, coloured with deep ochre’s and soft pastels they tell of Hoi An’s past as a great trading port.
An ancient trading port Hoi An has been known by several names, perhaps the most famous Faifo. First founded by the Hindu Champas in the 2nd century AD Hoi An began as a trading centre with the local Sa Huynh people who lived on the Thu Bon river and prospered, but chaos ensued in then 14th century when a dispute between the Tran Dynasty and the Chams manifested itself.
Between the 15th and 19th centuries Hoi An again returned to its role of trading port under the auspices of various regimes with the European powers of the day all visiting. The Chinese and Japanese had a particular presence in the city and soon small colonies evolved; those of Chinese ethnic decent are numerous even today.
Its demise came with the silting up of the Thu Bon river. Today its legacy of beautiful buildings is a testament to those days when exotic spices, lacquerware, fabric, paper, tea and sugar all passed through its dock.
Attractions in Hoi An
Hoi An old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its vehicle free streets are a delight to wander around with many buildings to explore. The Japanese Covered Bridge is a local landmark whilst there are several museums to visit. As ever the town has its fair share of temples and pagodas.
A visit to the wood carving villagers of Cam Kim Island is worthwhile and 5km from town the long sweep of famous China Beach begins. Entry is by ticket, the price of which helps conservation. Finally the UNESCO World Heritage Site of My Son is around 60km away – close enough for a day trip for those with time.
Activities in Hoi An
If you stay 2 days in Hoi An you’ll wish it was 3; if it was 3, 4 and so on! Apart from a walking tour and boat trips there are the museums and beach to enjoy, but to be honest half the attraction is just doing nothing. If you have to keep busy you can take a cooking course, get clothes made or even go diving and snorkelling.
Relaxing
Hoi An has some excellent restaurants and quite a few cool bars – new ones are popping up all the time.
Getting Around
The town is the perfect size for exploring on foot. For forays further afield hire bikes, cyclos or taxis.
